The Bedouin is a highly personal account of Allouzi’s experience reconnecting with his cultural heritage in Jordan, and the racial profiling he faced upon his return to the U.S. It offers an intimate and stark portrayal of Allouzi’sย internal reckoning with who was, and who he was becoming, throughout the experience.
In There Are No False Alarms,ย Snoek-Brown invites us to bear witness to his and his students’ experience in Winter 2018,ย when reports of gunfire at Highline College triggered a campus lockdown.ย With the same nuance and empathy he’s known for in his previous works, Snoek-Brown relays the day’s events and the emotional toll the situation took on everyone involved. The narrative brings to light deep-rooted anxieties surrounding school shootings โ and their increasing occurrence in the U.S. โ that many people carry with them on a daily basis.
These chapbooks are a part of the BCP chapbook series, which pairs emerging writers with a BCP author who mentors them through the publishing experience. The publishing process can feel like a daunting experience for emerging writers, as it is often a slow and tedious affair full of housekeeping obstacles to overcome (like navigating contracts, adjusting timelines, making design and marketing considerations, and working on a never-ending cycle of edits and revisions).ย With the BCP Chapbook Series, we aim to make that process less daunting by pairing new authors with those who’ve been through the publishing experience before while providing a platform to showcase their work.
Snoek-Brown and Allouzi worked together for over a year-and-a-half to complete their chapbooks. The chapbooks were printed locally, and are packaged in custom designed, handprinted folios created by Springtide Press โ aย phenomenal letterpress company owned and run by Jessica Spring in Tacoma, Washington.ย Only 100 printed chapbook pairs are available, although BCP will offer digital editions in the near future.
