Tacoma Ocean Fest Youth Readings

Head to Tacoma Ocean Fest this June for a series of youth poetry readings focused on water, conservation and nature! In total, over 60 youth submitted entries to a poetry and film  contest from 9 Tacoma high and middle schools. A panel of judges selected 5 film finalists and 20 poetry finalists who will read/screen their work live at the festival on June 10 and be awarded fabulous prizes by Ryan Mello.

The film segment is from 1:30 p.m. – 2 p.m. and the poetry segment is from 3 p.m. – 3:45 p.m.

The contest, sponsored by Tacoma Sunrise Rotary, springs from the first-ever Tacoma Ocean Fest, a free festival at the Foss Waterway Seaport on June 10 that brings together arts, sciences and water sports to help the city celebrate the ocean, learn about its threats and get inspired to protect it. The event is timed for World Ocean Day weekend.

The theme of the contest, open to all Tacoma and Chief Leschi middle and high school students, was to “be the voice of the ocean”, aligning with the festival’s environmental drive to inspire people to act on ocean threats like plastic and chemical pollution, acidification and over-fishing.

There will also be dance and music performances, food, stand up paddleboarding, kayaking, scuba VR film and art at the event! Please come out and enjoy an afternoon of ocean-themed fun while supporting Tacoma youth at the Tacoma Ocean Fest!
