Olympia Comics Festival @ Olympia Timberland Library (Friday) , Olympia Center (Saturday) and Danger Room (Saturday)

The Olympia Comics Festival is the Northwest USA’s longest-running alternative comics event!  Started in 2001 with the goal of celebrating comics as an art form and focusing on creator-owned work, as opposed to a simple book signing or a less focused event that includes other facets of pop culture.

For more info about this year’s event, please see the Schedule & Locations, and Guests of Honor, sections of the Olympia Comics Festival website.

This year’s guests of honor include Farel Dalrymple and Shannon Wheeler.

Farel Dalrymple is an eerily talented artist and writer, best known for his work on his creator-owned comics The Wrenchies, It Will All Hurt, and Pop Gun War, the Image Comics series Prophet, his contributions to Brandon Graham and Emma Rios’ anthology Island, and Marvel’s Omega The Unknown (with writer Jonathan Lethem).  Other highlights from Farel’s comics career include the DC crime series Caper (with writer Judd Winick), co-founding the anthology series Meathaus, and illustrating the origin story of the character “Moist” in Dark Horse’s Dr Horrible comic book written by Zack Whedon.  He has won the Xeric Grant and a Society Of Illustrators Gold Medal, and been nominated for the Russ Manning Award, multiple Eisner Awards, and multiple Danger Room Awards.  His most recent works are the forthcoming Image publications of It Will All Hurt and Proxima Centauri. Farel is visiting us from Portland, OR.

Shannon Wheeler is the seditiously witty artist/writer/creator of Too Much Coffee Man, a staple of alternative humor comics for over 25 years (which has been used in animated commercials and even adapted into an operatic stage show). He has garnered much attention over the past year for his newest book Sh*t My President Says: The Illustrated Tweets of Donald J. Trump, the preparation for which had him combing through over 30,000 of of the aforementioned’s tweets. Shannon is also a regular contributor to The New Yorker and Mad, and is a winner of two Eisner Awards. His numerous other works include I Thought You Would Be Funnier, God Is Disappointed In You and its follow up Apochrypha Now (both with writer Mark Russell), Grandpa Won’t Wake Up (with Simon Max Hill), Oil and Water (with Steve Duin), I Don’t Get It, and Postage Stamp Funnies. Shannon also comes to us from Portland, OR.

Farel and Shannon will both be taking part in OCF Preview Night at the downtown library (6/1/18 at 7 pm), in multiple panels at the Cartoonists Expo (which runs from 11 am – 5:30 pm on 6/2/18), and will be signing at Danger Room from 5:30 – 8 pm (6/2/18).
