Please join us on Saturday, June 16, 2018, 5 pm–7 pm for the illustration exhibition of The Magic Traveling Bunk Bed, and the Key to Moon City, a children’s book currently seeking publication by Yelizaveta Bakhtina.
A series of detailed fully colored illustrations, The Magic Traveling Bunk Bed presents the rural Russian lifestyle and the wonderment of childhood imagination and considers insight into cultural self-expression as a tool to advance personal growth and a coming to adolescence. The Magic Traveling Bunk Bed is a mystical adventure tale of a child and a pine cone hedgehog companion embarking on a night time voyage through uncharted territory. As parable, the narrative reflects the artist’s own voyage as a young immigrant during the transitional age between childhood and adolescence and underscores the systemic ways in which certain voices are allowed to blossom while others are muted during assimilation. Rooted in folklore and Russian decorative style, Yelizaveta’s multidisciplinary practice brings a narrative of self-expression within the context of ethnography, fable, and cultural tradition.
The artist will be attending. Illustration prints will be available for purchase at the event and online after the launch.
